What would you like to play if there are two of you? What about Kyōgi Karuta? Stock up on ingenuity, and a great evening is right there for you!
Kyōgi Karuta is a board (or floor) Japanese game. In your "deck" you have cards with tanka (waka) poems from the anthology 百人一首 – hyakunin isshu – "One hundred poems of one hundred poets". Each poem is divided into 2 parts. The reciter (card reader) reads out the first part, and a player (as soon as possible) tries to find a card with the second part on the field. The player who has no cards left on the field is the winner.
Stages of the game:
1. ⭐ Two players sit opposite each other (yay, it's a start!)
2. ⭐ The cards are shuffled face down (all 100, and don't cheat)
3. ⭐ Each player takes 25 cards for himself, the remaining 50 do not participate in the game (although they can be read out by the reciter).
4. ⭐ Players lay out cards on the playing field 87 cm wide and high to fit three rows of cards with gaps between rows of 1 cm (you don't need to run around with a tape measure, everything will work out by eye).
5. ⭐ Combine the playing fields of the players, and here's a game zone.
6. ⭐ The players have 15 minutes to memorize the position of the cards.
7. ⭐ Before the game starts, you need to bow politely to the opponent and the reciter.
8. ⭐ And now the game begins: the reciter reads out an introductory poem that is not included in the "Ogura Hyakunin Issyu".
9. ⭐ Then the cards are read out in random order. The player who first touched the card with the first part of the poem is considered to have taken this card. The reciter continues by reading the second part of the verse, and then a second later the first part of the next verse.
10. ⭐ The game continues until one of the players runs out of cards. It will be the winner.
11. ⭐ At the end of the game, you need to thank the opponent.
